Our Process
At HomeMovie.Com we have gone out and bought
all the of the professional Hollywood equipment
so you don't have to. Many of the same
tools that we use for your video are used by the
Hollywood studios for transfer of their theatrical
blockbusters. Before we can record your
movie to DVD we first need to encode the audio
and video into DVD compliant files. Below
is a description of the equipment required for
digital tapes Mini-DV, (DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO)
and analog tapes (8mm, Hi8, VHS, SVHS, BetaSP,
BetaMax)
Analog Video Tapes
Your analog VHS tapes are first placed into one
of our professional JVC SVHS decks. These
JVC decks offer chroma Noise Reduction, chroma
aperture correction and 3-line cross talk cancellation
which all combine to offer outstanding image quality.
We use Sony UVW-1600 with component outputs for
your BetacamSP tapes.
The audio from the tape is first converted from
analog to digital through professional Tascam
A/D converters. The digital audio is then
sent back to the encoder where it is compressed
into a DVD compliant digital audio AC3 file.
At the same time your tape is playing and your
audio is converted we also convert the analog
video to a digital signal. To do this we
send the the video signal through a Snell and
Wilcox analog to SDI decoder. The Snell
and Wilcox decoder provides high quality adaptive
decoding, with frame synchronization and adaptive
recursive noise reduction, for PAL and NTSC signals.
The noise reduction built into the card allows
us to control the the amount of video noise in
your analog video. We can raise the amount
of noise reduction to remove the video noise you
may see in your video.
The converted video signal is then sent via SDI
to the MPX3000 encoder. The MPX3000 is Spruce's
real-time encoder for MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 video
encoding, and AC-3 Dolby Digital 2 channel audio
encoding. Since the encoder is real-time
there is no need to first encode the audio and
video into an AVI or QuickTime file and then transcode
that file into a DVD compliant MPEG2 and AC3 file.
Many cheaper encoders first encode the video into
one of the above formats and then convert
the file to a DVD compliant file. Many others
don't compress the audio into an AC3 file leaving
it as a PCM audio file which is much larger than
digital AC3 file. This requires you to lower
the bitrate and quality of the video file to fit
both the MPEG2 video and the PCM audio onto the
DVD. The real-time encoder not saves time,
but it allows us to create higher quality DVDs.
As the audio and video are sent to the computer
the MPX3000 encoder compresses the audio and video
directly into into DVD compliant files.
We have designed our own encoding program based
on the Spruce Technologies SASI engine to control
all aspects of the encoding process. The
computer tells the deck when they should begin
to play and when to stop the video tape.
The computers also automatically adjust the bit
rate for your video based on the length of your
movie. This allows us to provide you with
the highest quality available.
Digital Video Tapes
Your digital tapes are output from our Sony DSR2000
professional decks through the SDI connections
directly into our MPX3000 encoders. The
DSR2000 DVCAM editing recorder is designed with
exceptional editing capabilities, multi-format
playback compatibilities and professional high-quality
images. Since these decks allow us to output
SDI we don't need to do any analog to digital
conversions keeping your video in its native format.
Authoring
After encoding your movies for DVD and Streaming
formats, our system creates the webmovies necessary
for our Director's DVD Authoring system. Using
a timeline-based drag-and-drop authoring model,
you can edit your video content, crop out unwanted
footage, re-arrange your video clips, grab content
from multiple tapes, select I-Frame accurate chapter
start points and chapter thumbnails, grab SnapShots
from your video, and custom-title your chapter
titles. All in an easy-to-use authoring system
that lets you preview your DVD menus and video
within minutes of submitting your final edits.
