Make Hay
Make hay while the sun shines... DVD is a "Premium"
product right now. Like any new technology, it has a higher
perceived value than it's predecessor (Tape). As long as DVD
maintains this "Premium" quality, you will be able
to sell it for a premium to tape. While many manufactures
are hailing the imminent demise of VHS, this is not necessarily
good for you. If and when DVD replaces tape completely, DVD
will become a commodity and not a premium. Competition between
Videographers will force the price of DVD to the point that
it will become far less profitable for you.
How long will it last? - We believe that DVD will remain
a premium product for the next 12 months. Those who are making
hay now are reaping the rewards. While many Videographers
are waiting for their customers to request DVD and missing
out on the gold rush, others are creating the demand by SELLING
DVD and it's value. For those who are waiting for the demand
to peak, the profits may be gone when the orders start coming
in.
Don't race to the Bottom. - As in every industry, there will
be those who use this new technology as a giveaway to entice
customers to do business with them. This is always bad business.
Every product you sell should have a profit component in it.
If someone in your market is racing to the bottom with DVD,
don't follow them. You'll still be in business next year.
Remember, it's the bottom for a reason!
