Packaging Your DVD

The two most common question weI get asked from Videographers are: "How much should I charge for a DVD?" and "How should I package my DVDs". Fortunately, these two questions are tied together. After talking to hundreds of our customers and visiting hundreds of their websites, we have a fairly good idea of what the common practices are out there.

Ala Carte Pricing:
When DVD was first being offered to brides, the prices being charged were by today's standards very high. As media prices have gone down and with DVD becoming more mainstream every day it is becoming more difficult to maintain the level of pricing of the past. We have seen a huge variance in pricing by different Videographers with prices as high as $600.00 from a California Company and as low as $79.00 for a basic DVD by a Videographer in Kansas.

Based on our research, the average price being charged for an event DVD in the US is between $175 and $225.

One problem with Ala Carte pricing is that potential customers may do direct comparisons between you and a competitor based on the difference in your DVD price. This allows your competitor to use DVD as a "Loss Leader" by pricing it very cheaply to lure in the customer. This may be compounded by the customer's perception that if you are "gouging" them on the DVD price, what else are you "gouging" them on.

Package Pricing:
The solution many Videographers have come up with has been to include a DVD within their wedding packages. This allows them to set a favorable price for the DVD without trying to up-sell additional services to their brides. Some are even giving DVD players to the brides with their premium packages.

A significant number of our customers are now including DVD in every package they sell!

One of the difficulties of offering DVD in only a few of your packages is that the customer can dissect the price of the DVD from the package by comparing it with others. If you include a DVD in every package and increase the price of each to make money on the DVD, you avoid this problem.
